Producing your own Stage ShowAs most choreographers and directors out there will know there is a very long journey from the idea for a show to the finished product and often many twists and turns on the way. Sometimes it can be years in development and making! 2014 was the year that I created my latest hit stage show and it was largely due to the huge amount of preparation and ground work in marketing and choreography that helped make the show the success it was. That and a lot of sensational aerial performance.
The Lounge – A Circus Cabaret was performed in Melbourne and was an exciting blend of aerial performance, acrobatics and dance all with a jazz theme. Featuring 10 performers and over 16 acts including contortion, straps, adagio, tissue, singing, hoola hoops, doubles trapeze and more it was an extravaganza. The feedback was that the cabaret style of the show kept was fresh and exciting.
I have created many stage shows over the years including contemporary dance shows, circus shows and shows made specifically for events like car launches. Here are 5 learning out comes specifically for those of you who may be thinking of producing, directing and performing in your own show.
1) ONLY produce, direct and perform in your own show if you know your own performance material inside out! Unless you are an experienced director and performer who is very familiar with your own performance material you will most likely crash and burn. You won’t get any time to rehearse your own acts! Most of your time will be spent marketing, organising technical aspects, directing every one else’s acts, organising music, costumes, rehearsals and so much more.
2) Marketing, marketing, marketing!! I got an average of 83% attendance at my show. That is pretty good if I do say so myself, but still not enough to make any real money on the first season! You can create a great show but if nobody knows about it your theatre will be empty.
3) A good publicist is worth their weight in gold.
4) Have at least one totally unique and memorable act in your show
5) Use experienced performers who will take responsibility for their performance acts. They will take your notes and run with them, know how to hold an audience and they will know their own performance material inside out.
In Melbourne there are so many talented aerial performers, acrobats dancers and ground based circus performers. That made the process of creating a show a lot easier.
Here is what some reviewers said about my show…
The Lounge is an extravaganza, with its blend of circus, dance and jazz; in a classy cabaret setting it dazzles its audience with a show that displays excellence in acrobatics, athletics, sophistication and excitement…..it is a top class show of international, Broadway status. If you want pure visual entertainment that will keep you mesmerized throughout then this incredible show is what you should see, without any hesitation.
