Hi, and welcome to the first blog. My name is Glenn Birchall, the founder of Lumiere Acrobatics. The idea of this first blog is to give you a bit of background about me and Lumiere Acrobatics. Future blogs will focus on different shows, acts and performances I have been involved in over the years and some learning outcomes I have experienced.
I’ve been performing, choreographing and directing dance, aerial performance, and acrobatics for over 20 years now. I have choreographed high end TV commercials, choreographed fashion shows, directed/choreographed stage shows, and directed many specialised acts for corporate entertainment including car launches, awards nights, gala dinners and much more. This experience allows me to create truly unique entertainment acts and also work to a clients brief delivering them a themed act or show that brings to life their creative vision.
I started as a dancer. When I was 17 I was studying accounting and decided to try a contemporary dance class just for the hell of it. That was all it took – I was hooked! I realised that accountancy was fine but dancing was so much better. I took classes and eventually auditioned for the NZ School of Dance. They must have seen some potential in me as I was a very untrained dancer by their standards. However two years later I was awarded a scholarship for a third year of training and was offered performance opportunities with professional dance companies. I never looked back.
From dancing professionally I went on to choreographing and was funded to create several dance shows. I worked with some of the best dancers in NZ at that time, with great composers who created original scores for dance, and collaborated with costume designers, lighting designers, film makers and often a marketing team as well. With experience in putting projects together and an understanding of budgeting and logistics it was relatively easy to transition to the commercial world, choreographing fashion shows, TV commercials, and corporate entertainment.
I moved to Melbourne to do a MA in choreography at the Victorian College of the Arts. As well as studying choreography I learnt non-linear video editing and animation, which I incorporated into my works. Soon I was working in corporate entertainment in Melbourne.
I had also been training as an aerial performer and acrobat and had designed and made my own unique aerial apparatus called the “Sphere” on which I performed an aerial ballet. This led me to conceive an apparatus called the “AeroSphere” a two meter diameter mirror-ball which opens in four petals like a flower. As it opens it reveals my aerial trapeze which comes floating out of the mirror ball and I perform my aerial ballet. I am currently marketing this amazing aerial apparatus nationally and internationally and am finding there is a real interest in something this unique.
